Why the Weeks After a Broken Hip Matter So Much

A broken hip changes life overnight, and the months after surgery decide how much of that life comes back. Our physiotherapists deliver hip fracture rehabilitation at home across Hampshire, picking up where hospital physiotherapy leaves off and staying until walking feels like yours again.

Most hip fractures are repaired within a day or two, with surgery to fix the bone or replace part of the hip, and hospital stays are short. Recovery, though, is measured in months, and the evidence is blunt: the people who regain independence are the ones who keep doing structured rehabilitation after discharge. Broken hip recovery time for older people typically runs three to six months to confident walking, and the biggest single difference you can make is what happens in the first twelve weeks at home.

Broken Hip Recovery: What the Months Usually Look Like

Families ask about broken hip recovery time for elderly relatives more than almost anything else, so here is the honest shape of it. Everyone moves through it at their own pace, and age, health and practice all matter, but most recoveries follow these phases.

1Weeks 1-2

Home, Safely

Transfers, short supervised walks with the frame, swelling and pain settling, and the home set up so everyday life works. The habit of daily movement starts now.

2Weeks 3-6

Strength Returns

Walking distances build inside the home and out to the front gate. Strengthening gets progressively harder and the frame often gives way to sticks.

3Weeks 6-12

The Confidence Phase

Outdoor walking, stairs mastered, and the fear of falling worked on as deliberately as the muscles. This is where fractured hip recovery for elderly clients is usually won or lost.

4Months 3-6

Back to Your Life

Longer walks, buses and shops, hobbies back on. Many people finish with a short maintenance plan to protect what they have rebuilt.

The injury

Fixed or Replaced: Why Your Operation Shapes Your Rehab

A fractured neck of femur is treated with either fixation (screws or a nail holding your own hip together) or a partial or total hip replacement, and the choice shapes early rehabilitation: what can be loaded, which movements need care, and how fast walking progresses.

We read your discharge summary, follow your surgeon's precautions exactly, and progress you as fast as the repair allows, neither reckless nor needlessly cautious.

The real enemy

After a Broken Hip, Fear Falls Harder Than People Do

Most people who break a hip were walking confidently the day before. Afterwards, even once the bone has healed, the fear remains: of the spot where it happened, of going out alone, of the floor itself. Left alone, that fear quietly shrinks a life faster than the fracture did.

We treat confidence as seriously as strength: graded practice of the exact situations that worry you, your own hallway, your own doorstep, the kerb outside, until steadiness feels normal again.

For families

If Your Parent Has Broken Their Hip

Hip fracture recovery in elderly parents is a family project. You can arrange everything on their behalf, join any visit, and get a plain-English update after each one. We will show you what to help with, what to let them fight for, and the early signs that deserve a phone call.

If you can, contact us before discharge: starting physiotherapy within the first week home protects more independence than anything else you can organise.

Broken Hip Recovery FAQs

Typically three to six months to confident walking, with the first twelve weeks doing most of the work. Age matters less than people fear; consistency of rehabilitation matters more. We give you an honest, personal estimate after the first assessment.

Within the first week of discharge, and we can often visit within 48 hours. Strength is lost fastest in the earliest weeks, so early sessions protect the most independence.

Most people who could walk before their fracture can walk again after it, with the right rehabilitation. The strongest predictors are starting promptly, practising between visits and rebuilding confidence alongside strength.

Early on: safe transfers, supported standing and short frequent walks. Then progressive hip and leg strengthening, balance work and stairs. Every programme is built to your operation and progressed at your pace, and we practise getting up from the floor safely once healing allows.

Yes. We follow your surgical precautions, read the discharge paperwork, and with your permission keep your GP updated. If something needs the surgical team, we say so quickly.

Recoveries Like Yours, In Their Words

★★★★★

South Coast Home Physiotherapy were professional and encouraging, and in a few short weeks took my husband from not being able to stand after a broken hip to walking and being able to transfer to a wheelchair and into the car. This allowed him to get back to social activities which he really enjoys. I would highly recommend them.
