Why Specialist Physiotherapy for MS Matters

MS is a complex neurological condition that affects everyone differently. Because it interferes with the nerve signals between the brain and the rest of the body, symptoms can vary significantly from person to person , and even from day to day. Muscle weakness, balance problems, spasticity, fatigue, and sensory changes can all fluctuate, making it a condition that demands a flexible, specialist approach.

Generic exercise programmes aren’t enough. MS rehabilitation requires a physiotherapist who understands the neurological basis of your symptoms, respects the fine line between productive exercise and over-exertion, and can adapt your programme session by session depending on how you’re presenting that day.

At South Coast Home Physiotherapy, our physiotherapists have specialist training and experience in neurological physiotherapy and understand the specific challenges MS presents. We take a proactive approach , maintaining and building your current abilities while implementing strategies to manage new symptoms as they arise.

What Does MS Physiotherapy Involve?

Our MS rehabilitation programme is tailored to your individual symptoms, your current level of function, and your personal goals. We focus on four core areas:

Core Stability & Balance MS can affect your proprioception , your body's ability to sense its position in space. By strengthening your trunk and core muscles, we provide your limbs with a more stable base. This reduces your risk of falls, improves your sitting and standing posture, and makes transfers , getting out of bed, out of a chair, in and out of a car , feel safer and more controlled.

Spasticity & Stiffness Management Many people with MS experience muscle tightness that makes limbs feel heavy, stiff, or difficult to move , particularly in the legs. Spasticity can interfere with both walking and sleep. We use manual therapy, specific stretching protocols, and positioning advice to help manage tone, reduce discomfort, and improve your range of motion. If you're receiving botulinum toxin injections or oral medication for spasticity, we work alongside your medical team to maximise the benefit.

Fatigue-Aware Strengthening Traditional exercise programmes are often inappropriate for MS because they can trigger a crash in energy that wipes out the rest of your day. We use fatigue-aware strengthening , short, high-quality bursts of exercise using resistance bands, bodyweight, and functional movements , to help you build and maintain muscle strength while respecting your neurological limits. The goal is always to leave you feeling better after a session, not worse.

Energy Conservation & Pacing One of the most valuable things we do is help you manage your energy. We analyse your daily routine and teach you pacing techniques so you spend your energy on the things that matter to you , whether that's gardening, visiting family, getting out for a walk, or simply getting through the day with energy left over , rather than using it all on basic household tasks.

Benefits of Home-Based MS Physiotherapy

For someone living with MS, the environment plays a significant role in how effective therapy can be. Travelling to a busy clinic is exhausting, and the energy spent getting there is energy that isn’t available for your exercises. By treating you at home, we remove that barrier , and we gain important clinical advantages:

Extra Support Alongside Your NHS MS Care

The NHS provides vital ongoing care for MS , your neurologist, MS nurse, and medication management are all essential. But regular physiotherapy provision for MS patients through the NHS is often limited, with infrequent sessions or short treatment blocks that don’t reflect the ongoing nature of the condition.

We work alongside your NHS care , not instead of it. Many of our patients continue seeing their neurologist and MS nurse while using our service to provide the regular, specialist physiotherapy input that keeps their mobility, strength, and balance on track.

By adding our service alongside your existing care, you benefit from:

MS Physiotherapy , Frequently Asked Questions

I'm worried about overheating during exercise. Is it safe?
Yes. We’re experienced in managing heat sensitivity in MS. We monitor your intensity closely, keep the room cool, pace sessions carefully, and can suggest cooling strategies , such as cooling vests or specific hydration techniques , to keep your core temperature stable during exercise.
This depends entirely on your goals and symptoms. Some patients benefit from weekly sessions to maintain momentum and monitor progress. Others prefer fortnightly or monthly reviews to update their home exercise programme. During a relapse or period of change, we may recommend a short intensive block before stepping back to a maintenance frequency. We adapt to you.
Yes. During a relapse, your symptoms may temporarily worsen and your exercise capacity may drop. We adjust your programme accordingly , reducing intensity, focusing on maintaining what you have, and supporting your recovery. Once the relapse settles, we progressively rebuild your programme. Having a physiotherapist who already knows your baseline is invaluable during these periods.
MS requires a physiotherapist who understands fatigue management, spasticity, the unpredictability of symptoms, and how to adapt a programme day to day. Our physiotherapists have specialist training in neurological physiotherapy and understand the neurological basis of your symptoms , not just the physical presentation.
Our primary focus is on mobility, strength, and balance. However, MS can affect pelvic health, and we can provide exercises to support pelvic floor function. If you need more specialist input, we can refer you to a dedicated pelvic health physiotherapist and coordinate your care.
Yes. We stay up to date with current MS clinical guidelines and are happy to provide progress reports to your neurologist, MS nurse, or GP. If you’re also seeing an NHS physiotherapist or occupational therapist, we’ll align our goals with theirs.

It’s never too late. Whether you’ve been recently diagnosed or have been living with MS for decades, physiotherapy can help improve your strength, balance, comfort, and safety. We adapt the intensity and focus of your sessions to match where you are right now.
Our session fees are competitive with other private neurological physiotherapy providers, with the added benefit that we come to your home. You can find full details on our pricing page.
