Why Movement Is Medicine for Arthritis

An arthritis diagnosis does not mean you have to accept pain and stiffness. Physiotherapy is one of the most effective, evidence-based ways to manage arthritis and stay active, and we deliver it at home.

Osteoarthritis involves changes to the joint cartilage and surrounding tissues; inflammatory types affect the joint lining. In both, keeping joints moving and muscles strong is central to good management, easing flare-ups and doing more with less pain.

The big myth

You Will Not Wear Your Joints Out By Using Them

The most damaging idea in arthritis is that activity spends some finite joint budget. The evidence says the opposite: joints are built to be loaded, cartilage responds to sensible use, and the best-evidenced treatment for osteoarthritis is progressive exercise. Inactivity, meanwhile, reliably makes arthritic joints stiffer and more painful.

Our job is the right dose: enough to build strength and ease pain, never so much that a joint flares, adjusted week by week with someone who knows your knees, hips and hands specifically.

Flare-ups

Flares Are a Signal to Adjust

Every arthritis has better and worse weeks. The mistake is treating a flare as proof that exercise was a bad idea. Stopping entirely means restarting weaker. During flares we drop the dose, lean on hands-on treatment, positioning and pacing, and climb back as it settles.

Over time you learn your own patterns and triggers, which turns flares from crises into scheduling problems.

Beyond the joint

Strength Is the Best Painkiller You Can Build

Strong muscles shield arthritic joints from load, improve balance, protect independence and lift mood: benefits no tablet matches. Whether it is osteoarthritis or an inflammatory type alongside your rheumatology care, the physiotherapy playbook is the same: build capacity, keep you doing the things that make life worth organising.

Questions

Arthritis FAQs

No. Appropriate, progressive exercise is the most strongly recommended treatment for osteoarthritis in every major guideline. Soreness after new exercise is normal and settles; we manage the dose so joints adapt rather than flare.

The principles hold, but we work alongside your rheumatology team and respect disease activity: training harder in remission, protecting joints during active flares. Tell us your medication and monitoring, and we fit around it.

Many people genuinely feel weather changes in their joints, and it is nothing to fear: symptoms shift, damage does not. Warm-ups, layers and indoor alternatives on bad days keep the routine alive.

Typically a weekly block to build the programme and confidence, then spaced-out reviews to progress it. Arthritis is long-term, so the aim is a routine you own, with us checking in rather than holding you up.

Yes. From walking aids to jar openers to rails, the right tool at the right time protects joints and independence. We advise in your own kitchen and bathroom, where the decisions actually get made.
