Why Physiotherapy Helps Hip Pain

Hip pain can make walking, sleeping and even sitting uncomfortable. We treat hip osteoarthritis, gluteal tendon problems and post-surgical hips in your own home.

Hip pain may be felt in the groin, the outside of the hip or the buttock, and common sources include the joint itself, the gluteal tendons and the lower back. Restoring mobility, strengthening the muscles that support the joint and improving how you walk and load the hip makes a lasting difference.

Groin, Side or Buttock: Three Different Stories

Where your hip hurts is the first clue. Pain in the groin points to the hip joint itself; pain on the outside, worst lying on that side, is usually the gluteal tendons; pain in the buttock often comes from the lower back. Each has a different plan, which is why 'hip exercises' off the internet so often disappoint.

Our assessment sorts out which story yours is, and treats that.

Tendons

Gluteal Tendons Hate Rest and Overload Equally

The tendon pain on the outside of the hip (common, stubborn, and worst at night) improves with a specific recipe: stop the compressing habits (crossing legs, hanging on one hip), calm the irritation, then load the tendon progressively. Rest alone almost never fixes it; neither does pushing through.

It responds well, but over weeks rather than days, and we keep you honest on the details that decide the outcome.

The arthritic hip

Living Well While the Hip Wears

If the joint itself is arthritic, strengthening and movement keep you walking and sleeping better for longer, and if a replacement is eventually the right call, going in strong transforms the recovery. We manage that whole arc: conservative care now, an honest steer when surgery becomes the better option, and rehabilitation on the other side.

Hip Pain FAQs

Groin pain, morning stiffness that eases with movement, and a hip that has slowly lost rotation point that way, but assessment settles it. Plenty of 'arthritic' hips turn out to be very treatable tendon or back problems.

Often, yes. Strengthening and activity modification improve pain and function enough that surgery moves years away for many people. And if the joint is truly ready, we say so; waiting too long has costs too.

That is the classic sign of gluteal tendinopathy: the tendon being compressed. A pillow between the knees, avoiding leg-crossing, and a progressive loading programme is the evidence-based recipe.

Generally yes, dosed sensibly: hips like regular movement. If walking is currently your trigger, we find the tolerable dose and build it back up rather than abandoning it.

Then you will go into it strong and come out of it supported. See our hip replacement rehabilitation page for exactly how we run recovery from day one at home.
