Falls Prevention & Balance Training at Home

If you have had a fall, a near miss, or simply feel less steady than you used to, targeted balance training is the single most effective way to reduce your risk and rebuild confidence.

We assess your strength, walking and balance in the place where most falls actually happen, your own home, and check for hazards such as loose rugs, poor lighting and awkward furniture heights.

Your programme combines progressive strength and balance exercises with practice on your own stairs, steps and thresholds, and we can advise on walking aids and footwear. Family and carers are shown how to support you safely between visits.

A falls assessment starts with the story: when and where you have fallen or felt unsteady, what you were doing, and what you have stopped doing because of it. We then test leg strength, walking pattern and balance using recognised outcome measures, so progress can be tracked honestly rather than guessed at.

Available across Southampton, Portsmouth, Fareham, Winchester, Salisbury and everywhere in between.

What's included

What Your Falls Programme Includes

Every programme is individual, but most combine the same building blocks:

  • A full strength, walking and balance assessment with baseline scores
  • A room-by-room home hazard check: rugs, lighting, thresholds, grab points
  • Progressive strength and balance exercises, made harder as you improve
  • Practice getting down to and up from the floor safely
  • Advice on walking aids, footwear and pacing
  • Regular reviews so the programme keeps pace with you

Who This Helps

People who have had a fall or a near miss, hold on to furniture as they move around the house, feel unsteady on stairs or kerbs, or have lost confidence going out. It is equally valuable after a hospital stay, when strength drops quickly.

Family members are welcome at sessions. Knowing how to help safely is often as reassuring for them as it is for you.

Falls Prevention & Balance FAQs

Anything else? Ask us directly. A physiotherapist answers every enquiry.

Most people notice steadier walking and easier chairs within a few weeks; meaningful, lasting change in strength and balance typically builds over two to three months of regular practice.

Yes. Done at the right level it is the single most effective way to prevent the next fall. Every exercise is matched to your current ability and progressed gradually, with support nearby.

On the first visit. Loose rugs, trailing cables, poor lighting and awkward furniture heights cause a large share of falls, and most fixes are quick and cheap.

Check yourself before moving and don't rush to get up. Teaching a safe, step-by-step method for getting up from the floor is part of every falls prevention programme we run.

No. We bring everything we use, and the programme itself is built around your own furniture: a sturdy chair, the kitchen worktop and the stairs are usually all we need.

Please. Knowing how to support practice safely between visits, and what to do if confidence dips, makes family the biggest multiplier of progress. With your permission we also send updates after visits.

Most people follow a weekly programme for the first month or two, then space sessions out as strength and confidence build. We review progress against your baseline at every visit and never book more input than the goal needs.
