Why Physiotherapy Helps With MND

Motor neurone disease affects everyone differently and changes over time. Physiotherapy cannot alter the condition itself, but it makes a real difference to how you live with it: maintaining mobility and independence for as long as possible, keeping joints comfortable, and adapting quickly as your needs change.

Carefully dosed exercise helps maintain the strength and flexibility you have, without causing the excessive fatigue that overworking weakened muscles can bring. A physiotherapist who knows you well can also spot changes early, advising on walking aids, transfers, positioning and equipment at the right moment rather than after a crisis, and coordinating with your MND team throughout.

The right dose

Exercise in MND: Enough, and Never Too Much

Exercise in MND walks a line: the right amount maintains strength, flexibility and independence for longer, while overworking weakened muscles causes exhaustion without benefit. Getting that dose right, and adjusting it as the condition changes, is precisely the job of a specialist physiotherapist.

We focus effort where it pays most: the muscles you rely on for transfers, walking and daily tasks, kept working safely for as long as possible.

Equipment and Adaptations Before They're Urgent

With MND, timing matters more than almost anything. A walking aid, a rail, a riser chair or a wheelchair introduced early keeps you independent and safe; the same equipment arriving after a crisis just marks what was lost.

Because we see you regularly at home, we spot change early and act on it: advising and referring so the right support is in place before it is urgent, and coordinating with your MND team, occupational therapist and wheelchair services.

Comfort and care

Comfort, Positioning and Confident Carers

As MND progresses, physiotherapy shifts weight towards comfort: stretching and positioning to keep joints and muscles comfortable, managing stiffness, and protecting skin and breathing through good posture day and night.

We train the people who help you (family or paid carers) in safe, comfortable ways to assist with transfers and positioning, so care feels confident rather than precarious for everyone involved.

Questions

MND Physiotherapy FAQs

No, and you should be wary of anyone who says otherwise. What physiotherapy genuinely does is help you stay mobile, comfortable and independent for longer at every stage, and that is worth a great deal.

Not at the right dose. Moderate, well-judged exercise helps maintain what you have; it is exhausting, overworked muscle that does harm. We set the level carefully and adjust it every visit.

At or soon after diagnosis. Early on it is about keeping strength, flexibility and habits; later it shifts towards equipment, transfers, positioning and comfort. Starting early means every later decision is made by someone who knows your baseline.

Yes. With your permission we work alongside your neurologist, MND nurse specialist, occupational therapist, and speech and respiratory colleagues, and we flag changes to them early.

Yes. We teach family and paid carers safe transfers, positioning and stretching routines, so the daily help you receive is consistent and confident.
