Charlie has been fantastic after my hip replacement, just can't recommend him enough. He was very patient with me while encouraging me with new exercises, and has really helped my confidence to move forward. I've made progress much quicker than I thought I would and that's all thanks to Charlie.

Knee Pain Physiotherapy at Home
Knee pain at any age, from kneecap pain and ligament injuries to osteoarthritis, treated at home.

Why Strengthening Is the Key to Most Knee Pain
Knee pain affects people of every age, from young athletes to those living with osteoarthritis. We get to the bottom of it and build a plan that gets you back on the stairs or the walking trail.
Knee pain may come from the joint surfaces, the kneecap, the ligaments, the meniscus or the surrounding tendons, and weakness in the hip and thigh is a very common contributor. Targeted strengthening is the most effective treatment for most knee problems.

The Hip's Job in Your Knee Pain
The knee is a hinge caught between two bosses: the hip above and the foot below. Weak hip and thigh muscles let the knee drift inward and take load it was never meant to manage, which is why so much kneecap and runner's-type pain responds to strengthening muscles that are nowhere near the knee.
Our assessment looks at the whole chain, and the programme usually trains the hip as hard as the knee.

Arthritic Knees Love Strong Legs
Knee osteoarthritis responds to activity: the strongest evidence for improving pain and function is progressive strengthening, exactly what most sore knees instinctively avoid. Stronger muscles shield the joint, and the right dose reliably reduces pain rather than wearing anything out.
We build it gradually from wherever you are now, using your own stairs and chairs as the training ground, and we are honest about where injections or a surgical opinion fit if the joint is beyond what exercise can do.
Knee Pain FAQs
No. The evidence points the other way: recreational runners have healthier knees on average than non-runners. What knees dislike is sudden spikes in load; most running-related knee pain is a training-dose problem we can fix.
Painless clicking is normal and harmless. Clicking with pain, swelling or giving way is worth an assessment, but the sound itself tells us nothing about damage.
No. This fear costs people years of function. Appropriate, progressive loading improves arthritic knee pain and protects the joint; it is the single best-evidenced treatment for knee osteoarthritis.
Sometimes, briefly: a support can settle a cranky knee or add confidence in a specific activity. It is a temporary bridge; strength is the long-term fix.
When pain limits daily life despite a proper run at strengthening, weight and activity changes. If you are there, we say so honestly, and our hip and knee replacement pages show exactly how we handle the rehab either side of surgery.
Your First Appointment
A relaxed but thorough conversation about how things started and what you want to get back to, followed by a physical assessment. You will leave with a clear explanation, a plan and your first exercises, and we will agree how often we should visit.

Hear From Our Clients
Emily is a lovely, engaging, patient and knowledgeable physiotherapist. Her time with my husband during his acute stroke recovery phase has been invaluable. Emily researched and adapted her sessions and exercises to my husband's specific requests and needs. Thank you Emily :-)
I had my first appointment with Charlie last month after coming out of hospital with 5 vertebral fractures. Barely able to walk or do anything for myself. Now 7 weeks later I'm able to walk unaided and do everything to look after myself.
This year my long term orthopaedic conditions and my vestibular migraine have been particularly troublesome. But thanks to Charlie's professional guidance my mobility is greatly improved and I am feeling much more confident when out and about.
After being let down by the NHS I was delighted to find South Coast Physio and it was a real bonus that they come to the home. Emily is skilled, helpful, friendly and solutions focused, providing the 1-1 support my daughter needs.
Professional, reliable and caring. The support from Charlie, our physio, has been invaluable.
Cannot praise them enough! Comprehensive and professional treatment plans that inspire you.
Enormously helpful advice and encouragement. I couldn't recommend more highly.
