Why Home-Based Falls Prevention Works

Research consistently shows that falls prevention programmes are most effective when delivered in the person’s actual living environment. Here’s why:

Extra Support Alongside Your NHS Falls Prevention Care

The NHS provides falls prevention services in many areas, including community falls clinics and group exercise programmes such as Otago and FaME classes. These are valuable , and if you’re attending one, we’d encourage you to continue.

We work alongside your NHS care , not instead of it. Our service adds one-to-one, home-based input that many NHS falls programmes can’t provide. Where NHS services may offer group classes or infrequent individual sessions, we provide:

FAQs

Falls & Balance Physiotherapy , Frequently Asked Questions

I've only had a near miss , do I still need physiotherapy?
Yes. A near miss is a warning sign that your balance system is under strain. Addressing instability now is far more effective , and far less disruptive to your life , than waiting until a fall and potentially a fracture has occurred. If you’ve had a near miss, your risk of a future fall is significantly higher, and early intervention makes a real difference.
Absolutely. Many of our patients start by rebuilding their confidence indoors and progress to walking in the garden, along their street, and on to local shops and parks. We work specifically on outdoor challenges , pavement surfaces, stepping over kerbs, crossing roads, and managing uneven ground.
A long lie is when someone falls and cannot get back up. Lying on the floor for an extended period can lead to serious medical complications including hypothermia, dehydration, and pressure injuries. We teach you ground-to-standing techniques , a physical plan to get yourself up safely if the worst happens. This is one of the most valuable skills we teach, and it significantly reduces the anxiety many people feel about falling when they’re alone.
Yes. Certain medications , particularly those for blood pressure, sleep, anxiety, and pain , can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or postural hypotension (a drop in blood pressure when you stand up). We can identify whether medication may be contributing to your balance problems and liaise with your GP to discuss whether a review of your medication timing or dosage might help.
Confidence often improves within the first few sessions as you learn new strategies and feel supported. Physical strength changes take longer , a typical falls prevention programme runs for 8–12 weeks to ensure the gains are lasting. Some patients continue with ongoing maintenance sessions beyond that to keep their strength and balance on track.
No. Balance and strength can be improved at any age. We regularly work with patients in their 70s, 80s, and 90s who make meaningful improvements in their stability, walking confidence, and independence. The key is consistent, progressive exercise , and it’s never too late to start.
Yes. We regularly provide falls prevention and balance rehabilitation in residential and nursing homes, working alongside care home staff to ensure your programme is supported between sessions. If your care is managed by a case manager, we provide full reporting to the required standard.
Our session fees are competitive with other private physiotherapy providers, with the added benefit that we come to your home. You can find full details on our pricing page.
